Environment Ministry Notifies Hazardous Waste Management Rules, 2016

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has on 3rd April 2016 notified the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2016. The Rules will ensure resource recovery and disposal of hazardous waste in environmentally sound manner. (more…)

Cabinet sanctions a policy on promotion of city compost

The Union Cabinet has on 20th January 2016 given its approval for a Policy on Promotion of City Compost in a bid to lower the maximum retail price of city compost for farmers.

The salient features of the policy are as detailed below:

  1. The Centre will provide market development assistance worth Rs 1,500 per tonne on the sale of city compost made out of municipal solid waste for scaling up production and consumption of the product; (more…)

Decentralization of Environmental Clearance for Sustainable sand Mining & Mining of Minor Minerals

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (“MoEF”) has vide its notification dated 15th January 2016 notified the amendments in Environment Impact Assessment (“EIA”) Notification, 2006 pertaining to Environmental Clearances (“EC”) with a view to bring transparency and sustainable mining, in the sand-mining sector.

The amendments are as detailed under:

  1. EC power of the MoEF shall be delegated at District level Committee headed by District Magistrate or District Collector for mining lease area up-to 5 hectares for individual lease and 25 hectares in cluster. (more…)

India announces new climate change targets

India has submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (“INDC”) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on 2nd October 2015. Some of the salient features of INDC are:

Cabinet sanctions national offshore wind energy policy

The Union Cabinet on 9th September 2015 has approved the National Offshore Wind Energy Policy (“Policy”). A few salient features of this Policy are detailed below:

  1. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (“MNRE”) has been authorized as the Nodal Ministry for use of offshore areas within the Exclusive Economic Zone (“EEZ”) of the country & the National Institute of Wind Energy (“NIWE”) has been authorized as the Nodal Agency for development of offshore wind energy in the country and to carry out allocation of offshore wind energy blocks, coordination and allied functions with related ministries and agencies.
